It is with great sadness that ESHRE has learnt of the death of the renowned embryologist Lynette Scott. Although spending much of her working life in the USA, latterly as Laboratory Director of the Fertility Center of New England in Massachusetts, Lynette was a great supporter of ESHRE. Indeed, only last year did she take part as a speaker in one of ESHRE's precongress courses in Stockholm. Lynette was a frequent participant in many other ESHRE events, and a former associate editor of Human Reproduction.

Study finds convincing evidence that the combined oral contraceptive pill helps painful periods
A large Scandinavian study that has been running for 30 years has finally provided convincing evidence that the combined oral contraceptive pill does, indeed, alleviate the symptoms of painful menstrual periods – dysmenorrhoea. The research is published online in Europe’s leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction.
ESHRE response to The Lancet report on the number of embryos to transfer
12th January 2012 - A prospective analysis of 124,148 IVF cycles (and 33,514 live births) published in The Lancet today provides further evidence on the association between the number of embryos transferred and live birth according to patient age.
ESHRE position statement concerning prion detection in urinary gonadotropin formulations
A recent laboratory evaluation, partly funded by a company producing recombinant human gonadotropin, questions the safety of urinary-derived human chorionic gonadotropin. Based on the detection of traces of normal prion protein in licensed urinary derived products, the authors surmise that these widely used gonadotropins might also harbor abnormally folded prion proteins that could result in cases of nosocomial transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
