Reproductive medicine is one of today’s most exciting scientific and clinical areas. Every month brings announcements of research developments, medical ‘firsts’, new rulings by regulatory bodies, or ethical controversies – often sparking heated debate among practitioners in the field themselves, as well as ethicists, legislators, the media and the public. ESHRE 2009 provides the media with the opportunity to hear the latest research news and interview the experts. All sessions, including Sunday pre-congress discussions, are open to the media.

Here are a few of the new results to be announced at the conference:

• First-ever study of European cross border reproductive care shows why patients travel for IVF, and where
• Dutch research has revealed that complications in early pregnancy or in previous pregnancies can predict the likelihood of further problems in current or subsequent pregnancies
• London fertility centre shows it is possible to successfully freeze embryos after biopsy for PGD and reduce multiple pregnancies in PGD cycles without adversely affecting pregnancy rates
• Does hard cycling training damage sperm? Spanish researchers have the answer
• How safe is pregnancy in women with cystic fibrosis? New research assesses risks of fertility treatment
• Two studies on polycystic ovarian syndrome shed light on its causes and its effects on brothers of women with the condition
• New less invasive genetic test greatly improves pregnancy rates in poor prognosis older women
• Daily sex for a week: is it good or bad for the quality of your sperm?
• Two new ovarian transplantation techniques give greatly improved results
• Largest study to date of endometriosis in pregnant women shows that they need special care
• World first: new test that can detect both genetic and chromosomal abnormalities in embryos is ready for clinical trials
• Dutch research sheds light on whether women who have a diminished number of eggs in their ovaries are at increased risk of trisomic pregnancies such as Down’s syndrome
• Belgian research finds that chromosomal problems affect nearly all human embryos; discovery may explain low fertility in humans
• Cancer survivors run particular risks when pregnant and need special monitoring
• Irish researchers discover genetic predictors of the potential success or failure of IVF in blood
