Embryo research

The Swiss law on medical reproduction ( FMedG) from January 2001 states in article 29 that embryos can only be cultured to establish a pregnancy.

As an indirect consequence embryo research is forbidden, with the exception of stem cell research as defined by decree of February 2005 which stipulates in article 1, that an embryo which can’t contribute to the establishment of a pregnancy has to be declared as “surnumerary” and will be destroyed if it can’t be included in a stem cell research project or in a project aiming to improve stem cell production under the described conditions.
