Born in 1955, married, two children. Received MD degree at the University of Oulu in 1980, completed PhD thesis work in 1982 and the residency in obstetrics and gynecology 1988, and in reproductive medicine 1991 in the same institute. Special competence in andrology 2003. He has been a postdoctoral fellow (NIH) at the University of California San Francisco 1984-1985 and a visiting scientist at Stanford University 1991-1993.
At present he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oulu University Hospital, Finland.
He has been a member of ESHRE Executive Board and Financial Committee 2001-2005, and Reproductive Endocrinology Interest Group since 2001. He has been president of the Finnish Gynecological Association and the Finnish Endocrine Society and served as member of ASRM International Affairs Committee and NFOG Executive Committee, and as assistant secretary and treasurer of IFFS. His clinical activities are focused on endocrinology, infertility and andrology. His research interests in the clinic are PCOS, insulin resistance, gonadotropin receptor mutations and infertility. In the basic research the main topics are the regulation of ovarian and testicular endocrine function, ovarian apoptosis and genetic causes of female infertility.
