The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) published the NICE 'Long Acting Reversible Contraception' guidelines. ESHRE believes this book may be of interest to its members and those involved in promoting awareness of sexual health and reproductive issues.
LARC will offer best practice advice for all women of reproductive age who may wish to regulate their fertility through the use of long acting reversible contraceptive methods. The guideline will identify specific issues that may be relevant to particular groups, including women with HIV, learning disabilities, physical disability and the under-16s. The document will also address issues for the use of the methods in women during menarche and before the menopause.
Expert opinion is that long-acting reversible contraceptive methods may have wider role in and an increase in their use could help to reduce unintended pregnancy. The very low uptake in these methods suggest that health professionals need better guidance and training to assist women to make an informed choice about long-acting reversible contraception and addressing consumer preferences is an important objective of this guideline.
NICE guidelines are evidence based systematically developed statements that assist clinicians and patients in making decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical circumstances. The advice contained has been derived from the best research evidence available using predetermined and internationally agreed methods and include consideration of its cost effectiveness.
