NMD: nonsense-mediated mRNA decay
• Translation-coupled quality control mechanism for mRNA substrate recognition and degradation.
• Recognizes and degrades aberrant mRNAs, e.g. mRNAs with a premature termination codons (PTC).
• Also regulates the expression of different types of endogenous mRNAsubstrates.
• At least nine different NMD proteins (UPF1, UPF2, UPF3B, SMG1, SMG5, SMG6, SMG7 SMG8 and SMG9) have been identified.
