  Endometriosis – therapeutic and diagnostic aspects
• endometriosis is a benign disease
• high recurrence rates make frequent operations necessary
• current endocrine therapy (-> hypoestrogenic state) has unwanted side effects (premature menopause, lowered bone density)
-> need for new therapeutics
* laparoscopy combined with histology of biopsies is diagnostic gold standard
-> need for (noninvasive) diagnostics
   Non-invasive biomarkers | Prof. Dr. Martin Götte
Wolf et al. Gyn Endo, 2009 / Ferring
  Endometriosis: Etiological concepts
– Retrograde menstruation > displacement of endometrial tissue to ectopic sites via the fallopian tubes
– Coelomic metaplasia > hormonal, immunological or exogenous stimuli may induce a metaplasia in cells of the visceral or abdominal peritoneum
> possible explanation for (rare) occurence of endometriosis in men under steroidal therapy and in prepubertal girls
- Lymphovascular metastasis > possible explanation for (rare) occurrence of endometriosis in liver, lung etc.
