  Biomarkers from blood (6)
Kuessel L et al. Soluble VCAM-1/soluble ICAM-1 ratio is a promising biomarker for diagnosing endometriosis. Hum Reprod. 2017;32(4):770- 779.
- Prospective, longitudinal study (the Endometriosis Marker Austria) on 49 (50.5%) women with endometriosis, and 48 (49.5%) controls with laparoscopically confirmed absence of endometriosis
- Investigation of mRNA expression in tissue samples and of serum protein levels of soluble VCAM-1 (sVCAM-1), ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) and EpCAM (sEpCAM) by ELISA.
- Preoperative serum sVCAM-1 concentration can be used to predict endometriosis, with 80% specificity and 84% sensitivity, cutoff 370pg/ml.
- The sVCAM-1/sICAM-1 ratio predicts endometriosis with 86.7% specificity and 90.3% sensitivity at a cutoff ratio value of 1.55.

    Biomarkers from blood – smaller individual studies
Letsiou S et al. Endometriosis is associated with aberrant metabolite profiles in plasma. Fertil Steril. 2017 Mar;107(3):699-706.e6
- Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics study on 25 women with endometriosis (cases) vs 19 women with laparoscopically documented absence of endometriosis (controls).
- A panel of acylcarnitines predicted endometriosis with 88.9% specificity and 81.5% sensitivity in human plasma, however, due to the low number of samples the data were not significant.
Mosbah et al. Int J Gynaekol Obstet 2016 Sep;134(3):247-51.
- Egyptian study on 48 endometriosis patients vs 20 controls;
- sensitivity and specificity values were 93.8% and 80.0% for serum IL-6, 58.3% and 60.0% for serum ICAM-1; 91.7% and 75.0% for serum glycodelin A.
Othman ER et al. Eur J. Obst & Gyn Reprod Biol 200 (2016) 1–5.
- Collective: endometriosis (N = 62) vs women with pelvic pain and/or
infertility, and negative laparoscopy result (N = 55).
- sTNFR-I: sensitivity of 61%, and specificity of 47.3%, at a cutoff of 81.87pg/ml.
