Course description
This course will focus on surrogacy, a highly complex and controversial technique, which is either banned in several countries, or allowed by law or contract with varied conditions both for the surrogate (and her family) and intended parent(s).
The process requires a high level of knowledge and expertise to look after all parties to the contract, with also the welfare of the future child. Commercialism is also hotly debated both at national levels and at international “cross border” levels.
We will discuss the various aspects of the process, from indications to the social and ethical questions raised when the number of stakeholders is so varied.
At the end of this course the following objectives will be met:
» to gain a better understanding of the surrogacy process, both medically and from the surrogate and intended parents point of view to explore the safety and legal aspects of surrogacy
» to gain an understanding the basis of regulations in different countries
» to gain up to date knowledge on psychological effects and the welfare of the child
» to be able to take part in the ethical debate specific to surrogacy

Fertility specialists, nurses and paramedics, legal experts , members of statutory authori- ties, as well as quality managers and fertility counsellors
Educational needs and expected outcomes
This course will enhance the knowldge of surrogacy, a highly complex controversial but topical field, variously regulated technique in Europe and worldwide. Most if not all specia- lists in the field will meet patient(s) who need this technique, and society at large has up till now shown its uncertainty by either banning surrogacy, or skirting the major concern about commercialism or pressure on women in low resources circumstances. The audience will benefit from an in depth analysis of all aspects, from practice to ethical, legal and social for the many stakeholders.
