Learing objectives
1. Study design: Become aware of the difficulties and risk of studies aimed at testing diagnostic accuracy
2. Learn basic statistical analyses for diagnostic studies
Definition and relevance
Definition
Results from one or more tests are compared with the results obtained with the reference standard on the same subjects.
Risks
Several factors threaten the internal and external validation of a study of diagnostic accuracy. Exagerated results can trigger premature adoption of diagnostic tests and can mislead physicians to incorrect decisions.
Results should be related to decisions regarding management of patients.
