COURSE DESCRIPTION
Since the historical conception of Louise Brown nurses and midwifes have played a role in fertility clinics.
This role differs between countries and clinics. Role expansion is definetly taking place in different European countries. This course starts by addressing the historical and the current role of nurses and midwives within European fertility clinics. It continues by providing knowledge for taking up the challenge of providing emotional support and of counseling patients on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. The afternoon will be devoted to an exciting practical session on ultrasound scanning. Delegates will pass by three work stations.

EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES
The role and body of knowledge of nurses and midwives is often undervalued, as evidenced by the lack of national associations, artcles and book publications of fertility nurses and midwives. The logbook of nurses and midwives taking the ESHRE exam showed that the role of nurses and midwives varies a lot between European countries. This indicates the need to provide evidence on the historical and current role of nurses and midwives and to provide nurses and midwives keen to expand their current role with the therefore necessary knowledge and practical skills.
