  Interventions: Social context
• Studies are lacking that evaluate training about fertility/sexual function for adolescents/young adults with
– Gatekeeper providers – Parents of at-risk youth – Partners
 Interventions:
What can we learn from SRH-related interventions?
 With parents1
Worksite-based randomized trial to improve parent-teen sex communication highlighted value of repeated discussions about sex with their children
• Adolescents with more vs. less communication repetition with parents about sex
– Felt closer to parents & more able to communicate in general & about sex
– Perceived these parent discussions occurred with greater openness
• Provided parents opportunity to reinforce & build on past teachings & children
opportunity to ask clarifying questions
With female partners
In-reach with female family planning patients successful approach to engage males in male-focused clinic
• # males served increased by 192% for adolescent & 119% for adult clients2
• # male visits (all ages) increased by 109% in intervention vs. 18% in control clinics3
(combined approach: Staff training, clinic changes, in-reach/outreach)
