Introduction to the HLA System
• Human Leukocyte Antigen otherwise known as Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)
• Chromosome 6p21.1-21.3
• One of the most polymorphic regions in the genome
• 3 clusters:
MHC Class I- classical :HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C no-classical: HLA-E, HLA-F, HLA-G
MHC Class II - HLA-DR, HLA-DQ and HLA-DP MHC Class III - Soluble
