  The issue of autoimmune thyroiditis
There is histological evidence of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in 27% of adult women and 7% of adult men.
Some studies suggest a 7:1 female to male ratio
Post partum thyroiditis can affect up to one woman out of ten
Some studies associate this condition with poor reproductive outcome
Antithyroid antibodies are frequently found in any blood screening in reproductive disorders
Antithyroid antibodies do not show convincing evidence of a detrimental effect on reproductive outcome
 Microchimerism, thyroid and reproductive function
There is abundant evidence indicating that the thyroid gland is one of the important organs where fetal microchimeric cells may become established. The consequences of fetal immune cells within the maternal thyroid gland remain an attractive explanation for the postpartum exacerbation of autoimmune thyroid diseases, but this influence is far from confirmed
