Course description

Patient safety in ART depends not only on technical excellence but also on effective communication, teamwork and a strong safety culture. This campus will explore the human factors that influence daily practice in ART centres, including communication under pressure, cognitive biases, multidisciplinary collaboration, disclosure following adverse events and team resilience.

Through expert lectures, interactive discussions and practical role-play exercises, participants will gain tools to strengthen non-technical skills, improve team performance and contribute to safer, more patient-centred reproductive care.

Target audience

Clinical embryologists; reproductive medicine specialists; nurses; midwives; quality managers; IVF laboratory managers; trainees; and other ART professionals interested in patient safety, communication and team performance.

Educational needs and expected educational outcomes

A need exists for training in non-technical skills related to patient safety. After completing this campus, participants will be able to recognise human factors that influence patient safety in ART and improve communication and collaboration within multidisciplinary ART teams.

They will also have learned to identify unconscious errors that may affect clinical and laboratory decision-making, and apply strategies to manage adverse events, disclosure and learning from errors. Moreover, attendees will be able to promote a stronger safety culture and team resilience within their own ART centres.

Innovative aspects

This campus focuses on non-technical skills, an area rarely addressed in ART education despite its importance for patient safety. The programme promotes multidisciplinary learning by bringing together clinicians, embryologists and nurses to address real-world challenges in ART practice.
