Course description

Endometriosis, although widely known, still remains an enigmatic disease. It consists of three phenotypic lesion types (peritoneal, ovarian and deep lesions) that can be found alone or in combination with each other. This course will focus on lesion type of deep endometriosis, which often causes debilitating pain and is linked to infertility. Both up-to-date basic and clinical scientific aspects will be discussed, starting from novel mechanisms concerning the pathophysiology of the invasive growth of deep endometriosis lesions, as well as its genetic background, which will include talks on epigenetics and biomarkers. From a clinical point of view, new insights in pain mechanisms involved in endometriosis-associated pain as well as diagnostic methods will be explained. Basic therapeutic aspects from a pharmacologic perspective as well as advanced surgical treatments will be discussed. And last but not least, the effects of deep endometriosis on infertility and the course of pregnancy and delivery will be reviewed.
