Course description

Medically assisted reproduction has become a standard clinical intervention in most countries; this reflects remarkable progress, given that the field of human clinical assisted conception is less than 50 years old. In that relatively short time, more than 8 million babies have been born and the field is now a mature component of contemporary medical practice. However, the field was jump-started by enormous advances driven by a comparatively small community of researchers, working in small groups, with modest funding – although the impact of their research was immeasurable. Much of these breakthroughs remain in living memory and inform current and future research. However, the pioneer-generation of the field are leaving research and it is valuable to look to the past to reflect on progress and the future to understand how old ideas continue to drive progress, innovate practice and underpin contemporary understanding.
