This course will explore how advances in reproductive biology can be translated into evidence-based laboratory and clinical practice in IVF. Bringing together embryology and andrology, the programme follows oocyte and sperm competence through fertilisation, zygote formation and early embryo development, highlighting how gamete-derived factors shape embryo potential and clinical outcomes.

The campus will examine what can currently be measured, selected, preserved or modified in the IVF laboratory. Emerging areas will also be appraised such as functional gamete diagnostics, fertilisation mechanisms, in vitro gametogenesis, early embryonic organisation and integrated laboratory assessment.

Educational needs and expected educational outcomes

Educational programmes often address embryology and andrology separately despite the fact embryologists routinely work with both female and male gametes throughout the IVF process. This workshop has been developed to address gaps in the understanding required for evidence-based laboratory practice.

The campus will equip participants with the skills to critically evaluate current and emerging markers of gamete competence, genome integrity and functional potential. They should be able to explain how oocyte and sperm biology interact to influence fertilisation, zygote formation and subsequent embryo development. By the end, attendees will have learned to apply scientific evidence to clinical and laboratory decision-making.
