Rules and requirements

Get started here: gesea.eu/pathways/ecres

The ECRES pathway is intended for gynaecologists and residents in gynaecology with an interest in reproductive surgery, who aim to develop and validate their skills in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures through a structured, competency-based certification programme.

The programme is structured in three progressive levels, and each level must be completed before moving to the next.

The entry point to the ECRES pathway is the GESEA Level 1 E-Learning Certification: it provides the basic knowledge and skills needed for surgical training in operative room. It can be obtained through the website academy.esge.org/p/gesea-ecres-pathway-level-2

To obtain the GESEA ECRES Level 1 Certification, you need to complete three key steps: theoretical preparation, practical training, and final assessment.

First, you must enrol in the GESEA ECRES Level 1 e-learning programme on the following website academy.esge.org/p/gesea-ecres-pathway-level-2. This includes theoretical tutorials and quizzes covering essential topics such as anatomy, instrumentation, operating room organization, endoscopic techniques, and complication management. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of completion, which is mandatory to access the certification exam.

In parallel, you are expected to develop your basic psychomotor skills through hands-on training using GESEA training tools (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy simulators). This can be done at your local institution, in accredited GESEA training centres, or during official courses and congresses.

Once prepared, you can register for a GESEA ECRES Level 1 certification session at an accredited centre or during an official GESEA event or during the ESHRE annual congress. The certification consists of:

- a theoretical exam (TESTT1) with multiple-choice questions

three practical exams:

- LASTT1 (laparoscopic skills)

- SUTT1 (suturing skills)

- HYSTT1 (hysteroscopic skills)

Successful completion of these components leads to the GESEA ECRES Level 1 Certificate.

You are required to hold a GESEA ECRES Level 1 Certificate, which is mandatory to access Level 2 (unless you qualify for a formal bypass based on documented surgical experience, see gesea.eu/pathways/ecres).

To obtain the GESEA ECRES Level 2 Certification, you need to complete three key steps: theoretical preparation, practical training, and final assessment.

First, you must enrol in the GESEA ECRES Level 2 e-learning programme on the following website academy.esge.org/p/gesea-ecres-pathway-level-2 which provides more in-depth theoretical knowledge in areas such as advanced endoscopic techniques, instrumentation, anatomy, and complication management. Completion of this module and obtaining the Level 2 e-learning certificate is required before applying for the certification exam.

In parallel, you are expected to develop your advanced psychomotor skills through hands-on training using GESEA training tools (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy simulators). This can be done at your local institution, in accredited GESEA training centres, or during official courses and congresses.

Once adequately prepared, you can register for a GESEA Level 2 certification session at an accredited centre or during an official GESEA event or during the ESHRE annual congress. The certification consists of:

- a theoretical exam (TESTT2) with multiple-choice questions

three practical exams:

- LASTT2 (laparoscopic skills)
- SUTT2 (suturing skills)
- HYSTT2 (hysteroscopic skills)

Successful completion of these components leads to the GESEA ECRES Level 2 Certificate.

When you have the necessary surgical experience and related competence, you may apply for the ECRES Diploma as issued by ESHRE. The GESEA ECRES Diploma is a video-based expert-reviewed diploma where surgical skills are evaluated by performing a select number of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures. Applicant must be a current member of the European Society of Human Embryology and Reproduction (ESHRE) and must provide testimony of surgical clinical practice curriculum over a maximum period of 5 years, signed by both applicant and Head of the department with copy of all related protocols to certification@eshre.eu. The evaluated surgical procedures are listed here: gesea.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ECRES-GESEA-LEVEL-2-DIPLOMA-APPLICATION-FORM-and-surgical-clinical-practice-curriculum.pdf

The next step is to submit recorded surgical procedures, following the instructions that will be provided by the ESHRE Certification Office.
