Course description

The male genital tract is the target of several bacterial and viral infections that can have deleterious consequences not only in the males themselves but also in their partners, and progeny. Infections of the male genital tract can lead to infertility and sexual dissemination of major bacterial or viral pathogens including emerging viruses. The management of bacteriospermia and male viral infection (HIV, hepatitis B and C, human papilloma virus, ZIKA and SARS-CoV-2) during medically assisted reproduction (MAR) will also be discussed not only in a clinical point of view but also considering the MAR procedures.

Target audience

Urologists, Embryologists, Reproductive Endocrinologists, Clinicians in Reproductive Medicine, Basic scientists in Reproductive Medicine, Paramedicals, Nurses, Midwives

Educational needs and expected outcomes

  • To be able to perform the diagnosis of bacterial infectious in the male genital tract
  • To be able to perform the diagnosis of viral infectious in males and to identify the consequences of the male reproductive health
  • To be able to manage bacterial infectious in the male genital tract within the context of MAR To be able to mange viral infectious in males within the context of MAR

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Understand the physiology and physiopathology of bacterial or viral infection of the male genital tract including the testes
  • Acquire knowledge on specific bacterial infections that can impair semen parameters and male fertility
  • Acquire knowledge on specific viral infections that can impair semen parameters and male fertility
  • Acquire knowledge on the management of males with bacterial infection requiring Medically Assisted Reproduction
  • Acquire knowledge on the management of males with viral infection requiring Medically Assisted Reproduction
  • Acquire knowledge on emerging viruses and their potential impact on male genital tract

Innovative aspects of the course

The course will discuss up-to-date knowledge on bacterial and virus infections that can affect the male reproductive tract and consequently the reproductive health considering also several new emerging viruses. This aspect of male reproductive health has not been addressed for many years.
