Course description

The experience of unsuccessful treatments is a challenging experience both for patients and fertility staff. In fact, discussing new plans, sharing bad news, and dealing with the psychological impact of such trajectories are usually “difficult” talks. This course aims to address patients' and fertility staff's needs in these contexts and discuss tools, training, and interventions available to promote healthy adjustment and development of new life trajectories and goals.

Target audience

Psychologists, counsellors, nurses and midwifes, physicians and other health professionals involved in assisted reproduction

Educational needs and expected outcomes

This course will address the following educational needs:

  • Review the needs of patients going through unsuccessful outcomes in ART
  • Review the interventions and tools available to help patients deal with these unsuccessful trajectories
  • Discuss the challenges from healthcare professionals working in daily care with patients with unsuccessful trajectories

After the course, participants are expected to:

  • be aware of the interventions aiming to deal with unsuccessful trajectories
  • be knowledgeable about strategies to deal with and counsel in case of unsuccessful trajectories

Innovative aspects of the course

The psychosocial intervention on unsuccessful trajectories had considerable challenges. Not all health professionals working in the fertility field received specific education on this theme. We hope this course will fill this gap, contributing also to a shared discussion with experts in the field.
