Course description
This course provides an in-depth overview of genetic testing in reproductive healthcare, focusing on clinical applications and ethical considerations. It will cover expanded carrier screening (ECS), and the role of ECS in informed decision-making and gamete donation. The benefits, limitations, and future direction of genetic testing for infertility will also be discussed. The intersection of ECS, infertility testing, and preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic diseases (PGT-M) will be explored. Real-world case studies presented by experts and participants will foster debate on the technical and ethical challenges in reproductive genetic testing.
Target audience
Genetic counsellors, gynaecologists, geneticists, ethicists, and researchers.
Educational needs and expected educational outcomes
Advances in reproductive genetics have outpaced clinical practice, creating a need for targeted education on integrating tests such as ECS, infertility panels, and PGT-M. Many healthcare professionals lack up-to-date knowledge on evolving guidelines, how to interpret results, and ethical considerations. This course addresses these gaps by best practice recommendations for ECS, alongside clinical and ethical guidance, equipping participants to deliver informed, patient-centred care.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to describe the clinical utility, benefits, and limitations of ECS and infertility testing. They will also have learned how to apply current best practice recommendations for ECS and other genetic tests from both clinical and genetic testing provider perspectives. Other educational outcomes include the ability to interpret genetic testing results accurately and understand their implications for reproductive care.
Innovative aspects of the course
Real life cases discussion and comparison of current landscape on genetic testing provision in European countries.
