Learning objectives

We review the implementation, estimated benefits, personal and societal harms, and clinical considerations of prioritising IVF embryos based on their risk for polygenic conditions, such as breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes, or schizophrenia.


Course description

In this webinar, we will present the recently developed review paper on polygenic embryo screening, prepared by ESHRE delegates and experts in the field. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the outcomes and implications of PES, ranging from embryology, statistical genetics, epidemiology, reproductive medicine, and ethics, we will provide self-contained presentations to reproductive specialists interested in PES followed by a review of key arguments for and against the introduction of PES.

Needs assessment

The development of new polygenic risk score tools for reproductive genetics is fast and their potential is revolutionary but still debatable. Despite a heated debate around this new technology and concerned statements of scientific society on its clinical utility, it is already available to IVF patients in some countries.

To provide a self-contained educational background to reproductive specialists interested in the subject and a comprehensive and critical review of arguments for and against the potential application of PES.
