PCOS Name Change
ESHRE welcomes the introduction of the term polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) as the new name for the condition previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This change represents an important step towards improving understanding of this common and complex disorder affecting an estimated 170 million women worldwide.
In particular, we strongly support the move away from the term “polycystic”, which has long been recognised as misleading, as it focuses on ovarian morphology despite the absence of true cyst formation. This mischaracterisation has contributed to delayed diagnosis, suboptimal care, and insufficient attention in research and funding. The revised terminology better captures the multisystem, endocrine and metabolic nature of the condition, as also highlighted in the 2023 international guideline for assessment and management, to which ESHRE contributed.
We welcome the proposed three-year transition period, during which both terms will coexist, accompanied by a global education and awareness campaign. This phased approach is essential to ensure clarity for patients, healthcare professionals and policymakers alike.
ESHRE believes that this name change will have a major impact on healthcare globally. It has the potential to significantly improve awareness, diagnosis, and holistic management of the condition and offers new hope for patients faced with the condition.
