Course type

Basic training course

Course description

This course is aimed at psychologists, counsellors, nurses and midwives working in an assisted conception setting and who are communicating every day with a wide range of patients seeking treatment. The course will cover all communications from initial contact through treatment and will use a range of tools to help participants improve their skills. One unusual tool is a comic booklet which has been used to raise awareness of a fertility problems in women in minority and ethnic groups. The development of materials taking into account differences in health literacy and language will be covered and the ability to convey meaningful information to patients using the magic of numbers will be explored. One of our speakers will also talk about preparing patients for finishing treatment, when they actually begin their fertility journey. This mix of resources and different approaches will provide extremely interesting and powerful information and improve the communication skills of all who attend.

  • Improve communication between health professionals and patients
  • Develop materials to enhance information for patients
  • Learn how to convey results from investigations and treatment appropriately

Educational needs and expected outcomes

The course will offer practical information about individualised communication with patients from a wide variety of backgrounds using a broad range of materials and skills.

Innovative aspects

Patients may prefer to receive information in a way that might not always be obvious to health professionals and we hope that the variety of tools offered during this course will improve communication. A novel use of a comic booklet to help raise awareness about fertility issues in women from minority groups will be presented. We will also use "the magic of numbers" to convey chances of success and communicate complications in a comprehensive way.
