Course description

The purpose of the workshop is to show the standard steps in the development and implementation of new laboratory and clinical methods in everyday ART practice. The emphasis will be on the importance of monitoring the safety and efficacy of these methods and to draw attention to their potential for error.

The course will focus on the rules for designing and registering basic and clinical studies and on the importance of collecting data for professionals, government and patients. The speakers will consider which methods of ART should be used when conventional approaches do not achieve their treatment goal. A large part of the course will emphasise the importance of identifying the influence of commercialisation in reproductive medicine and how it can be minimised with the help of professional guidelines, regulations, professional bodies and patient organisations.

Course objectives

  • how to properly design laboratory, clinical or epidemiological studies
  • why a study should be registered and approved by an ethics committee
  • the impact of collecting data for professionals, governments and patients
  • additional methods or therapies in repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles
  • how to recognise commercialisation in ART
  • the role of professional bodies and patient organisations in minimising the effects of commercialization.
