EU Institutions covering ART in Europe

DG SANTE /SoHO (Directorate General for Health and Food Safety)

Treatments based on Substances of Human Origin (SoHO) are used in a variety of medical therapies including ART.
We are well aware that the use of SoHO presents risks, and for this reason, the European Commission develops and carries out the Commission's policies on Public Health and Food safety and sets high standards of quality and safety regarding SoHO. This happens through:

  • Legislation EUTCD

  • Practical guidelines
In collaboration with expert bodies such as the Council of Europe (CoE) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

  • Coordination and implementation
In collaboration with National Competent Authorities (CAs) that are responsible for the implementation of the requirements established in EU legislation. Periodic meetings and surveys.

  • Vigilance: Traceability (Single European Code)
Permits traceability from donor to recipient, and vice versa through a unique identifier called the Single European Code (SEC).

  • EU-funded actions
Funding for Actions in the area of SoHO are available through the EU Health Programme, and are aimed at supporting the EU mandate on safety and quality.
