PROJECT “classification of endometriosis”

Classification of endometriosis

In 2019, a working group was established with representatives of 5 societies in the field to collaboratively work towards a classification system for endometriosis. The societies involved are ESHRE, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) and the World Endometriosis Society (WES).

In development of an international classification for endometriosis, several intermediate steps were identified, two of which are:

  1. To map and assess the currently published classification systems, including studies that have attempted to validate them (Review)
  2. To agree on a common terminology in endometriosis (Glossary)
  3. Endometriosis classification systems: An international survey to map current knowledge and uptake

The draft papers for the first 2 goals were published for stakeholder review until 28 February 2021. The updated papers have been submitted for publication.

Currently, comments are collected for the 3rd goal “Endometriosis classification systems: An international survey to map current knowledge and uptake”. The draft document is available here. Comments can be submitted until 1 August. Please use the reviewer comments form, which you can download here.
