To examine the rationale, evidence, and controversies surrounding the universal use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and to explore when it is genuinely indicated versus potentially overused.

Course description

This webinar will delve into the clinical and ethical debate surrounding the concept of “ICSI for all.” Whether intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) should be offered to every patient undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART), or reserved for clearly defined indications? Leading experts with contrasting perspectives will present the evidence and engage in a moderated discussion, followed by an extended audience Q&A.

Needs assessment

A combined review of the literature, clinical registries, specialist surveys, and stakeholder interviews reveals a significant gap between current practice and the available evidence: ICSI is often employed even when severe male-factor infertility is absent, with no documented benefit in live-birth rates, added cost and ethical concerns. Unified guidelines and decision-support tools are therefore needed to help professionals clearly differentiate mandatory from optional indications, integrating clinical data, cost-effectiveness, and genuinely informed consent.

Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the arguments for and against universal ICSI use and be better equipped to make patient-centred decisions in their clinical practice.
